Traditional shipowning sectors might be undergoing tough times, but in the two major segments that are currently booming, offshore support and gas carriers, Norway is a leading player. Activity by Norwegian companies in both these areas is worldwide, in all the main offshore industry locations, and extends from shipowning to developing and applying the most state-of-the-art technology that meets the latest demands for energy efficiency and reduced emissions. This edition of Norwegian Solutions reflects the breadth of Norwegian investment in these advances. However, Norwegian maritime companies recognise the need to collaborate and forge productive alliances with similar minded organisations in other countries. Class society Det Norske Veritas (DNV) is expected to complete its merger with German counterpart Germanischer Lloyd (GL) later this year. Fears of any loss of Norwegian identity are being allayed by the likely retention of the new organisation’s head office in Oslo and the assurance that DNV’s commitment to investment in research and development will be retained in the new entity. T he strength of Norway’s maritime cluster stretches well beyond the capital Oslo, which is mainly focused on the commercial and financial aspects. It hosts two of the leading ship finance banks in the world, and provides another accessible source of finance for investment through bond issues on the Oslo Børs. When finance for investment is in such short supply, Oslo has managed to keep its financial taps open. All the way up Norway’s west coast is a string of regional hubs that host shipowners, equipment suppliers and research and training institutions. That list is set to extend even further north as efforts step up to open the High North areas bordering on the Arctic for exploration, production and transportation. In these hubs companies large and small work closely together for mutual benefit developing and producing market-leading technology that enables Norway to remain at the forefront of a highly competitive market. It does, however, face challenges, mainly in the form of high costs and a growing shortage of highly skilled engineers and other staff to maintain this momentum. Against the trend in most of the rest of Europe, Norway has retained a successful shipbuilding industry, concentrating on its strengths in the offshore industry and adapting its operations to counter increasing costs. It is coming up against fiercer competition from Asian shipbuilders that are seeking to gain a foothold in the offshore support vessel market to replace the slowdown in orders from traditional shipping sectors. It will need to respond again to this challenge. One approach is for greater collaboration, as is already happening, with Norwegian companies selling designs and equipment for installation in Asian shipbuilders. N orwegian maritime companies can also count on the positive support of the Government and its various bodies supporting trade, by providing export guarantees and loans, and backing efforts to promote companies in overseas markets. The fact that so many Norwegian maritime companies are present in Asia, as owners, operators and managers, and supplying equipment, is testament to the country’s global reach. It was quick to realise the opportunities in Brazil as its offshore industry began to grow, with the result that Norwegian owners account for a high proportion of the offshore support vessels operating in those waters, with continuing investment in maritime technology and in training staff there. Some of the new features at this year’s Nor-Shipping reflect the evolution of Norway’s maritime industries, with a much bigger focus on the offshore sector and efforts to promote the maritime industry to young people looking for a worthwhile career. Despite the challenges, all the signs are that Norway is set to continue and enhance its reputation as a leader in maritime technology innovation. At a time when the global shipping industry is looking for technical solutions to reduce harmful emissions and increase efficiency, Norway is likely to provide many of the answers. This issue of Norwegian Solutions demonstrates the strength and depth of Norway’s contribution to the global maritime industry. Beyond the intensity of its domestic maritime clusters, Norwegian companies have established major presences in all the world’s leading shipping and offshore centres. In Brazil in particular the rapid development of the offshore oil and gas sector has been spearheaded by Norwegian operators and Norwegian technology. Investment in research and development in state-of- the-art technology is enabling the exploitation of new resources in ever deeper and more remote locations. As more opportunities arise in future, Norwegian companies will be at the forefront. Riviera Maritime Media, publisher of Norwegian Solutions, is pleased once again to be the official theme park media partner for two of the exhibition halls at Nor-Shipping 2013: those covering IT & Navigation, and Propulsion & Machinery, as well as sponsoring the Nor-Shipping BBQ-party for the first time. In Nor-Shipping’s 50-year history it has developed from a modest shipbuilding exhibition into a leading, wide-ranging maritime industry gathering, extending over a whole week and featuring conferences, networking events and many other activities. Welcoming some 35,000 delegates from about 80 countries including more than 1,000 exhibitors, Nor-Shipping 2013 looks set to continue its growth and reinforce its position as a premier industry gathering. Its attraction for international delegates has been cemented by the strong presence of the Norwegian maritime cluster and Norway’s growing reputation as an offshore oil and gas nation and knowledge hub. Not satisfied with resting on their laurels, the Nor-Shipping team has launched many new elements for the 2013 week. “Of course, we have retained some of the successful formula from the 2011 Nor- Shipping week. Our future-focus continues, promising visitors and delegates the lowdown on everything from innovative technology and business models, to new start-ups and upcoming talents, as well as the synergies emerging between the ocean industries of shipping, offshore and seafood,” says Nor- Shipping director Vidar Pederstad. “The pivotal importance of the Nor- Shipping exhibition as a premier industry arena for meeting the market and exploring partnerships is indisputable. We have made it bigger and better than ever this year, attracting exhibitors from 54 nations worldwide and across the maritime value chain.” Since its inception in 1965, the biennial exhibition has continually evolved as a showcase for an industry that steadily generates new opportunities in new markets. Nor-Shipping 2013 will once again provide a high-profile platform for the industry’s innovators to display their technical and business solutions. The ever more popular Nor-Shipping conferences, are acknowledged as high-level arenas for visionary leaders to share how they are addressing key issues. They will feature prominently in this year’s packed Nor-Shipping spreads its wings The Agenda Offshore Conference will feature leading speakers Nor-Shipping aims to reflect the uncertainties and opportunities facing the global shipping industry as well as showcasing Norway’s unique maritime clusterThe Norwegian International Ship Register Norway’s complete maritime cluster consists of the Maritime Authority along with specialized, world leading companies in all segments of the industry. The Opening Conference focuses on how to seize the opportunities offered by fuel- efficient ship design, LNG, smarter use of new technology and growth markets. Its key speakers include Andreas Sohmen- Pao, chief executive of BW Maritime and a director of BW Gas; Kristin Holth, Head of the shipping, offshore and logistics division of Norwegian financial services group DNB; and Claus Hemmingsen, board member at A.P. Moller-Maersk, and chief executive of Maersk Drilling. The Agenda Offshore Conference, which was headlined in 2011 by the then Petrobras chief executive, José Sergio Gabrielli, moves from strength to strength. When Helge Lund, CEO of Statoil, and Andy Brown, upstream international director of Royal Dutch Shell, speak at this year’s conference, the maritime industry, which is increasingly dependent on the offshore sector for revenues, will be listening attentively. Norway has the second largest offshore service vessel fleet in the world by ownership. Its expertise in deepwater, harsh environment oil drilling therefore makes Nor-Shipping a natural location for showcasing this specialism. Mr Pederstad said: “In addition to hosting the exhibition, high-quality conferences, and seminars that are second to none, Nor- Shipping strives to create channels and arena that support networking and collaboration. Throughout Nor-Shipping week, we smooth the way for important professional connections to be made, allowing delegates and exhibitors to promote their companies’ profiles and open up new prospects.” A prime example is the Nor-Shipping Forum, which will again offer industry leaders a rare opportunity to meet partners and competitors in a more intimate setting. To support free and open discussion, a facilitator steers the dialogue and ensures confidentiality through use of the Chatham House rules. “For Nor-Shipping 2013 we have heightened our focus on professional and social networking opportunities, not least by establishing a vital interface with both the maritime finance community and our very own ‘neighbourhood’ for visitors and VIPs,” said Mr Pederstad. Nor-Shipping Venture is a matchmaking initiative for capital-hungry companies and investors that has both exhibition (Venture Park) and presentation arena (Venture Forum) elements. It will allow start-up companies to present themselves to investors as well as having affordable first-time entry as a Nor-Shipping exhibitor. Venture Park dovetails with another new initiative, Innovation Park, where small, innovative Norwegian companies will showcase their solutions and products. For the first time, many of the movers and shakers from the maritime world who congregate in Oslo for Nor-Shipping will make their base at the city’s new waterfront neighborhood of Tjuvholmen. For the duration of Nor-Shipping, Tjuvholmen will be transformed into Nor- Shipping Island – an exclusive arena for networking, socialising and community events. With so many maritime players rubbing elbows on the Island, there will y be ample opportunity for connecting with peers, both informally and at the many community events. “Attracting young talent – and keeping it – is crucial for the maritime industry’s future,” said Mr Pederstad. “Promoting the involvement of the next generations in the maritime and offshore industries is part of our efforts to bring the right people together and provide them with dynamic networking venues to make things happen. “Growth and innovation slow down when an industry doesn’t have a steady stream of Ocean Talent Camp is designed to attract young people to the industryNext >
